This is the week lots of celebrities come to town. Saturday, May 7 - Louisville, Kentucky and Churchill Downs hosts the annual Run for the Roses at the Kentucky Derby. Even if you are not a fan of the race, you are likely curious what people wear and do at the Derby.
It is a huge event, with people from everywhere. I have often flown into Louisville during the Derby weekend while returning from a board meeting at Dallas Christian College. I have always been amazed at the number of private jets parked along the airport infield. Literally, there are hundreds of private planes; it looks like taxis lined up out front to a normal person.
If you enjoy a horse race and the beauty of the pageantry, this is something for you. I’m not sure anyone is going to top the Triple Crown winner from last year, American Pharaoh. All of these horses, trainers, and owners are celebrities at the Derby. Kentucky will certainly roll out the red carpet for the world to see. Enjoy the race.
This weekend at Journey is also Mother’s Day weekend. I am sharing part two in the current series, The Bucket List. As usual, Journey has a small give-away for all moms who are here to join us. We’ll share some humor for moms in the opening video. Then I’ll give an outline of what mom does everyday - live a selfless life.
The truth is, there are no ordinary moms and there are no ordinary Jesus followers, not really. On your bucket list of life, let’s learn to be more like mom and Jesus. Learn to go the extra-mile and make someone’s day better tomorrow than it was today. These are Journey core values, and pretty good goals for all of us.
I hope that all of us are able to treat people in our own family like V.I.P’s arriving on the Red Carpet every day; Jesus would. I hope you will join us and bring another Journey guest to join our worship. Journey is the kind of place where people can belong.
See you this weekend in either our Saturday Journey @6pm or Sunday Journey @10:30am. Let’s all make mom smile by treating her to some Red Carpet attention this weekend. Go mom!
