The Jesus Emoji

July 7, 2016

“34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ 37 Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ’Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Matthew 22:34-40  NIV

The new trend in content marketing is using smaller messaging for greater impact. Increasingly brands are marketing themselves via short-form social media like Vine, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. This phenomenon is no longer just for fun. Market research indicates customers who engage with brands via social media spend 20-40 percent more than other customers who do not.

A similar trend today is seen in text messaging. We use the “emoji” to communicate our strong feelings. The definition of the word emoji is, according to the Oxford Dictionaries is:  “A small digital image or icon used to express an idea, emotion, etc., in electronic communication.”

This weekend at Journey we celebrate nine years of history. We’ve planned for you to arrive and enjoy a piece of birthday cake at the coffee bar. I will share a message with you called DO GOOD THINGS GOOD! I first presented some this talk at the high school, almost nine year ago; I’ll update some of our history.

July 15, 2007 was our first public worship service at the Fair Grounds with bag chairs and a sheet on the wall for our power point. Two weeks later we moved into the cavernous High School auditorium location for almost two years setting up and tearing down our gear every weekend. We lived out of a borrowed trailer and pieced together a sound system from a mixture of cords and mikes.

We were originally called Portable Church for several months, without a permanent name or location. We’ve been at our current leased location now almost seven years and still are an adventure with God. Most of the people who are in our Journey audience today have met us through our caring and kindness in the community that created our brand of a different kind of church. People Matter Most.

Who is Journey Community Christian Church?  If we could use a Jesus emoji for our brand and label the verse I used earlier, Matthew 22:34-40 would be the icon. We are passionate for God and people seeking Him.

I hope you can join us this weekend for the party.  God is good.
