More Prayer

May 3, 2018

April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer. The National Prayer Committee was formed in the United States in 1972.

There is a longer history of prayer in America that dates back to the Colonists and Pilgrims having days of prayer for crops and threats from enemies. Thanksgiving was born out of the need to thank God for answers to our prayers for His assistance. People have always prayed for guidance and inspiration in times of crisis.

Whether you are new at prayer or have practiced a memorized daily prayer for years, God is listening to our hearts each moment and day. Our (your) prayer matters in whatever form or fashion it appears. Give it try.

This weekend is part two in our series Valued. If you have ever felt lonely and desperate, needing an answer to your prayer this lesson will surely encourage you. This is an excellent series for all of us; especially when we’re ready to give up. The world of every day is filled with the unexpected and tension at every corner. Even when we’ve prepared and prayed for the day ahead there are often unexpected twists and turns that challenge our faith.

I gave away another Journey backpack this morning. We decided last fall that we would purchase some new backpacks and fill them with essential items a person who was on foot or traveling through might find helpful. We meet people all the time at our door who are in desperate situations for some rain gear or warm clothes. Today I met a guy who was headed to an appointment at a nearby drug recovery clinic.

Our small Journey gift gave him a lift. Say a prayer for the people who need a lift, who along the way have lost their dreams for a better life. We say it all the time, “God is bigger than our problems.” Some problems take more prayer than one person can prayer for themselves.

Join us this weekend and bring another guest who maybe could use your friendship and a prayer in their life right now. Tell them you know a place where everyone feels welcome and a place everyone could belong.

See you in one of those Journey weekend services or online as you follow us with our FB livestream. We’re in this together.

Let’s all pray more.
