Eye Exam

September 20, 2018

How are your eyes? Have you had an eye exam lately? Do you plan to get one soon? Not the kind of exam for your next pair of glasses. Instead, the kind of eye exam Jesus spoke about when describing generosity.

“41 Jesus went over to the collection box in the Temple and sat and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two pennies. 43 He called his disciples to him and said, ‘I assure you, this poor widow has given more than all the others have given. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.’ ” Mark 12:41-44 NLT

The gold standard for giving according to Jesus is how much did we sacrifice? It would be pretty intimidating to have Jesus sitting next to you as the offering plate was passed each week. In reality, He really is there watching what proportion of our resources are we willing to contribute to His mission on earth. C. S. Lewis, when asked how much should we give to charity replied, “I’m afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.”

This weekend at Journey worship we’ll explore lesson #3 in our series, the BLESSED

life. This weekend we’ll discover that the most generous people plan to be generous. Are you ready to make a kingdom impact through generosity of time, talent, and treasure? Giving to God sacrificially, not just from surplus, is the pathway to discipleship. Love God more, follow God more, trust God more, believe God more.

Sometimes we give spontaneously when we pass a needy person. This is great but God has even more in mind for every Jesus follower. Other times we have a strategy and give from our ability to help others. Maybe you are good at gardening and you share vegetables all summer with the elderly. That’s also a wonderful generous thing to do. However, the really big impact comes for us, and others, when we give beyond what is even normal.

Join us this weekend and bring a guest who may be curious about why we do so many things for others in this community. Help them to see we are choosing to be weird in a God kind of way, doing things others would not do.

And, oh yeah, don’t forget this Sunday 4-7 pm is our annual picnic and FUN ON THE FARM. Plenty of food and fun for everyone; bring a guest to the FARM. Stay tuned regarding the weekend weather which is still pretty unclear. If the weather is not favorable, we’ll just push around the chairs inside Journey and have our FOOD & FUN inside. We’ll let you know as soon as possible about the location so stay tuned.

If you serve on a volunteer team at Journey I want to personally thank you for the sacrifice you are making. You are being generous with your time and talent, even when schedules are very busy. I appreciate your personal sacrifice to make God look good each week.

Let’s do this... we’re in this together.
