Virtues, what's that?...

October 4, 2018

If you’re in the age group of 16-29, the topic of virtues may be a new one for you to consider in your future. Your training and experience thus far may have centered primarily around new technology and information for successful living. You may never have considered how to live a virtuous life? You may be asking, “What’s the difference?” Why might I want to take a look at virtues to pursue in life?

Character is important, whatever the age group. We may be brilliant in our chosen field of study receiving regular promotion. However, without character traits which are exceptional, there will always be something lacking in our personal life. This is the idea we want to pursue together in

the next series, Forgotten Virtues.

Here’s a short section in the Bible to give you a little flavor for what virtuous living is really all

about.

“12 Therefore, as Gods’ chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:12-14 NIV

Since God chose us to be different and weird in a God kind of way, demonstrate unlimited love for others even in a toxic world. This weekend we’ll take a look at the virtue called “Honor.” You have probably said this or heard this, “Give honor, where honor is due.” It may be a statement you’ve heard regarding first responders, firemen, or local volunteers. Certainly in all those instances we should show respect and honor for sacrifices given. Respect, however is something earned. Honor is just a little different.

There are numerous groups of people worthy of our recognition and respect. How might honor have an even deeper meaning? In this first episode from the Bible we’ll highlight parents, those in public positions of authority, and church leaders we are commanded in the Bible to honor. This will be a relevant discussion in our modern culture where anger and strong feelings are often dishonoring.

I believe this series will be helpful in the background of daily discussion groups on topics of honor and respect. Bring a new Journey guest and help them get acquainted with our mission to be friendly and welcoming to everyone.

Truth: Honoring others begins with honoring God. Give Him your time, talent, and treasure. He is worthy. See you in one of our weekend services. You can help us grow the Saturday service with a few more friendly faces. Journey Sat @ 6 pm. Or if you like the Sunday morning worship gathering best, try Sun @ 10:30 am.

See you this weekend for part one, Forgotten Virtues.
