Levi Strauss & Co. has a unique history and amazing heritage. Anyone might make a pair of blue jeans, but Levi Strauss & Co. made the first blue jean - in 1873. Levi Strauss, the German inventor, two years after his father’s death in 1846, immigrated with his sisters to New York from Bavaria. There he met two older brothers who owned a NYC-based wholesale dry goods business called “J Strauss Brother & Co.” In 1853 Levi Strauss at the age of 24 traveled to San Francisco during the California gold rush and made his fortune, but not in gold. He established a wholesale dry goods business under his own name, serving as the West Coast representative of the family’s New York firm. Levi eventually renamed his company “Levi Strauss & Co.” Twenty years later Levi Strauss partnered with a local tailor named Jacob Davis; Davis helped Levi write a patent for the now famous Levi jeans. Patent #139,121 was issued on May 20, 1873. They made the jeans out of denim - a traditional fabric for men’s work-wear. Levi perfected the rivets in the jeans to make them stronger and last longer. Within a short time the jean was a bona fide success. Originally the jeans were called “waist overalls” or just “overalls.” It was not until 1960 when Boomers adopted the name “jeans.” The rest is history, as they say. Levi jeans today are still durable work clothes and also the most popular apparel on earth. Who doesn’t wear jeans? The company today is a billion dollar industry. Not bad for work clothes that are really hard to wear out; Levi jeans are durable. Anybody can make jeans, but there is only one Levi jean. This weekend is part three of our current series, Rescue (Me)… and may I suggest, God’s rescue plan for everyone, is durable like Levi jeans. There is only one. His Name is Jesus.
