The Better Me
What if I told you today most of our worst decisions in life could be traced to identity theft? And what if I then told you I was not talking about the kind when someone hacks into our personal information? What if I explained the worst type of identity theft is not knowing how to be our best self?
This weekend at Journey we launch a new summer series, GeneroUS, learning God has more for me than ME! Our worst life decisions occur when we’re unclear of our identity as Jesus followers. Here’s a big idea: What if a life of generosity is not just about our checkbook, but about everything. And what if your entire life (as Jesus intended) is to be one long gift to others?
I found some support for this thought in the words of author Stephen King at Vassar College graduation ceremonies 2001:
“A couple years ago I found out what ‘you can’t take it with you’ means. I found out while I was lying in a ditch at the side of a country road covered with mud and blood and with the tibia of my right leg poking out of the side of my jeans like the branch of a tree taken down in a thunderstorm. I had a MasterCard in my wallet, but when you’re lying in the ditch with broken glass in your hair, no one accepts MasterCard.
We come in naked and broke. We may be dressed when we go out, but we’re just as broke. Not a crying dime. All the money you earn, all the stocks you buy, all the mutual funds you trade - all of that is mostly smoke and mirrors.
So I want you to consider making your life one long gift to others. And why not? All you have is one loan, anyway. All that lasts is what you pass along…. “
True generosity begins when we understand that God has more for me than ME. Generosity is an invitation to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.
Join us this weekend at Journey Community Christian Church or listen later online to the podcast. We’re all in this thing together. I promise this stuff in the Bible will spark you or shake you up or whatever. Something happens when the Bible is aired that isn’t on Netflix.
Join in a small group of people somewhere who are never perfect but always genuine; find a few folks who are authentic and tell the Truth.
God has a better me in mind than ME.
