Staying In My Lane

September 26, 2019

There are plenty of things I am not qualified or skilled at doing. After numerous mishaps with plumbing sort of things which leak or are stopped up, I am never trying plumbing again. Things haven’t gone well in the past with my attempts at plumbing; let’s just leave it at that. We all have to find our lane and stay in it, so to speak.

This weekend begins our new fall series loosely based on what is commonly called the "7 Deadly Sins" in the Bible. Although this list does not appear explicitly in the Bible, these seven vices and ungodly behaviors can be found in numerous places throughout the Bible. For example, you might want to check out these verses (Proverbs 6:16-19; Galatians 5:19-21).

The classic listing of vices (pride, envy, anger, gluttony, lust, lazy, and greed) by ancient philosophers and theologians of history warn of reckless behaviors, out of our lane as Christians. This list of behaviors, when unchecked, only worsen with time and become deadly; eventually, eroding our God relationship. Sin unchecked becomes the deal breaker with our God. This pattern was repeated over and over in the Bible by people inside and outside the Church.

Clearly, God wants what is best for us (Jesus followers). He will coach and guide us to find alternate behaviors. You might want to check out these verses also (Ezekiel 36:26-27; Galatians 5:22-23). It’s never too late for anyone; God is for everybody. However, we must partner with God; willing to surrender our self-centered lifestyle.

Most of us reading this blog for today would probably agree with everything I’ve said so far. However, we’re all just people; people who easily get distracted and drift out of the safety of the lane were driving in. I know I shouldn’t be texting while driving but you know how it goes. We imagine ourselves being more capable, qualified, and skilled at life stuff than God Himself. It just happens to all of us at times, something like me thinking I can manage a simple plumbing situation or texting and driving at the time. I tend to drift in the roadway; we all do.

Join us this weekend and have a friendly conversation with someone you know who is not going to any Church regularly. Invite them to be your guest at Journey. This weekend we introduce the topic of PRIDE that creeps into the equation. We have this over confidence in our own ability at times. If we have some measure of success we take the credit and pride can begin to swell inside us, claiming what WE accomplished. NOT A WISE MOVE.

This series will be a good check-up for all who wander and drift a bit in life. God wants to safely guide us back into the lane to follow before a mishap like plumbing gone bad at your house. We’re in this together. Join is the worship gathering this weekend at Journey or your own location where you live.

Hey, just come inside a place of worship (big or small) and get a few life tips from the Bible and the Master of all trades, Jesus. Wanting to stay in your lane? Try more Jesus this week; help others do the same.

Hey, and one more thing. Don’t forget the annual FUN ON THE FARM picnic this Sunday afternoon 4-7 pm at the Hunt farm. Call or text for directions and details.
