Do You Have a Green Thumb?

I know people who talk to their plants. Maybe there is something to this. Plants of every variety seem to thrive with a person like this. Without special training some people are good at growing things in every season of the year. In contrast, I’ve met other people, highly qualified, equipped for growing things; people who grew up on farms and ranches. Some even having experience and training in horticultural, seemingly, unable to grow dandelions! What’s this about?

Growing things is not just about having attended classes, buying a book, or watching a YouTube tutorial on urban farmers. Growing things, and being good at it, is a knack which is developed and driven by a passion. When we want to do something really well, we must be willing to put in the extra time.

Our passion and desire for growing things is an irreplaceable ingredient when growing almost anything. In sports, academics, music, or medicine those who excel are highly committed to becoming better.  A real commitment and desire is the needed element in our success to grow careers, wealth, and retirement. Money doesn’t grow on trees. People willing to save and sacrifice, working long hours, with a plan for future reward—often succeed. This is common sense.

Can we agree? Growth is not free. This weekend at Journey Church Cynthiana we take a look at Romans 2:17-29. We’re in a series from Romans and this time we’re chasing this idea:  If we are a Jesus follower—behaving badly—this is a really bad idea. God wants us to mature and keep GROWING our faith. This is not automatic just because we’ve been baptized and attend church often.

Christians, growing faith deeper, is like someone with a “green thumb.” A person who is able to grow living things which are dead and dying. IMAGINE God having a “green thumb” so to speak. He has placed the Church in communities where He wants to help people grow their faith. When we arrive at the local Church each weekend where Jesus is the main topic—we’re often bringing with us bad habits, needing to be broken. Jesus is like the BEST Gardener EVER, wanting to help us get rid of some weeds which prohibit healthy growth. Wow, God!

Jesus changes everything. Have you heard the Elevation Worship KLOVE song, “Dead things come alive, in the Name of Jesus.”  Brandon Lake & CeCe Winans?  Check it out. Even the worst garden and landscape with the right kind of attention from Jesus, the “Gardener,” changes everything. Wow, Jesus!

Join us THIS weekend—Sept 20/21. BACK-to-Church-Weekend across America. What a time to be alive. Come and bring somebody. Let’s check out the Bible—guiding us, for GROWING stuff…. Coming alive again!

P.S. -  Annual picnic THIS Sunday, Sept 21, 4-8pm at Flat Run Park. Come on out… and grab a  bite—You don’t have to have a green thumb… God does.
