Simple is Better

Connie and I enjoy eating out for an occasional date night in new locations. However, trying a new menu brings potential challenges. Sometimes the writing on the menu is too small. Or the room is dimly lit. In either case, I can’t make a wise selection. Often, I end up grabbing a pair of reading glasses out of the car. Or, in a hurry, I ask Connie to read the menu for me.

Eating out in new places is like traveling to new places. Small towns with a few stoplights and one major intersection on Main Street are easy to navigate, unlike a complicated network of high-ways, and twisting, turning, interstates in metropolitan areas. What would we do without Siri and Google Maps helping us find our exits and on ramps?

For some people the Bible is quite simple and clear. They’ve been regular students of Bible sermons and small group studies for years. They’ve memorized favorite verses in the Bible like someone would memorize the daily menu at Cracker Barrel after years of favorite meals. After years of church gatherings, followed by eating out at Cracker Barrel after services, we’re pros at making our menu choices and selections.

Others, unfamiliar with the Bible — maybe never eaten at a Cracker Barrel — they may feel overwhelmed and anxious. Sometimes people are nervous trying to navigate options; selecting a church to attend. Once inside, hearing the Bible message may feel like a menu hard to read or understand in a new restaurant.

Finding our way, finding ourselves, finding God with unclear, uncertain information may present too much complexity; leaving us perplexed. Simple is often better. When I am lost, a round-about intersection makes my head spin. I would rather have a clear stop sign, with options to turn left or right.

This weekend at Journey we’re jumping back into Romans ch 5:12-21. This time we’ll discover there are two basic “trails” to pick from each day. One trail is BAD. The other trail is GOOD. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by so many options, tight margins, and uncertainties, this message from the Bible may be just right.

If you have a friend, ready for simple instructions, directions, and menu selections related to God, the Bible, and the Church — this message may be just exactly what they’re looking for!

Make plans to grab a seat, bring a guest. Jump inside Journey Sat@6pm or Sun@10:30am for simple and clear Bible instructions for people everywhere.

You can choose your trail.
