Freedom

"You. My brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather serve, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13 NIV

As our nation celebrates the 4th of July this week. Never forget the sacrifices of others, in the past and present, making freedom possible for us today. If you are a patriot, an American, July 4th is a day for flying the Stars and Stripes, the Flag of Freedom in the USA.

In a similar way, we who follow Jesus have been given religious freedom by Jesus on the Cross. The Apostle Paul is writing to remind young Christian families in Galatia, never to forget the sacrifice of Jesus death for us. Not only are we forgiven by Jesus, we are given new freedom to worship God, through Jesus the Son.

Before Jesus came, approval from God was rule based. In the Old Testament, God used men like Moses, the Ten Commandments, and the Levitical priesthood with animal sacrifices. This was the solution for sin during the Old Testament period. In the Bible, over and over, the Levitical priests presented sacrifices with the blood of animals for sin of the Israelites, God’s family.

Then, Jesus came, changing everything. His death on the Cross and resurrection brought Jesus followers (Christians) new freedom to worship God in a new way. Now, in the New Testament era, God’s approval became relational based. Jesus, God’s One and Only Son, became the “Perfect Lamb” of sacrifice, once and for all. He became the Messiah, Savior of the world. No longer just the Jewish faith; also the Gentiles, like us (Non-Jewish).

National freedoms like in America and religious freedoms like in the churches of Galatia are to be remembered and celebrated, often. Sacrifices have been made for all to benefit. This weekend we begin a new series for July at Journey Church Cynthiana. The 4th of July is a great time to launch this new topic from the Bible.

Enjoy a burger and hotdog with family and friends on the 4th. Maybe, catch a movie, then watch some fireworks, if you enjoy this, too. Then make plans for joining us in person and online this weekend for BOLD behavior… this weekend - part one.

What happens to people when they get into the Bible?  People say, you seem different, more positive and confident?  When we seriously get into the Bible, the Bible gets into us - and we become more BOLD… in a God kind of way. People really notice….

Have a safe and terrific 4th of July. Then schedule time with God and others. Let’s grab a few thoughts like the text above. Let’s be FREE in Christ to worship, but don’t overdo it. Instead… serve and be humble, always, loving one another. BOLD behavior….
