It was 22 degrees this morning as I headed to the Journey office. It seems odd to be talking about ice cream on such a frigid morning. However the love of ice cream some people enjoy crosses all barriers it would seem. How about you? Are you a Baskin Robbins fan? If so, what is your favorite flavor?
I did a little Google research and found, “Brother-in-laws, Burton Baskin and Irvine Robbins from Glendale, Ca., 1945 founded the worlds largest ice cream company. What was once a selection of 31 flavors - Baskin Robbins ’31’ stands for a different ice cream flavor for each day of the month - has grown to more than 1,400 in its flavor library.” Can you say, “Wow, ice cream!”
The only organization I can think of which comes remotely close to offering so many flavors - may be - the modern day Church today with its myriad of denominational “flavors”. If you have never attended ANY church before it can be confusing. Like trying to pick a flavor of Baskin Robbins 31 ice cream with a weird name like “mustard flavor” ice cream; There are a lot of different churches with different names over their doorway today.
Can you believe there used to be only ONE church flavor in the New Testament world. It was simply known as the Christian Church Jesus started. This weekend at Journey Church we’re finishing up our current four week series, Momentum, getting from where you are, to where you want to be.
In our final episode we take a deeper dive into Acts 15:1-35 in the Bible. The early 1st century Church of Jesus followers were known simply as “disciples”. Later in Antioch they were called Christians for the first time. This simple label lasted for about 300 years until numerous denominations began to be introduced. That still causes confusion today for people who don’t go to church.
Today thousands of churches (non-denominational) like Journey Community Christian Church hope to restore the original model of the Church Jesus had in mind in the Bible. Instead of more and more Baskin Robbins library of flavors of churches with denominational names - let’s just be disciples who follow Jesus in the Christian Church described in the Bible.
Join us this weekend for final look at MOMENTUM, getting from where we are, to where we want to be. Simple church ideas where everyone is invited to the Jesus party.
The love of Jesus some people have… is even more than ice cream… and will cross all barriers!
How about you? Will you continue to help build goodwill and MOMENTUM - community in our community? Will you go the extra mile and inviting someone different than you to be your guest?
Christmas is an easy time to make the invite. Let’s do this. WE are better together. Who knows - maybe we can give away some FREE ice cream at the Journey Coffee bar for Christmas treats!
